Investors and partners
Invest in local solar that stays local
Nelson Energy Co. develops community-scale solar in West Michigan and holds each project for its full life. We're building relationships with investors, lenders and partners who want long-lived energy assets close to home.
The model
Develop, build and hold
- Strategy
- We develop projects ourselves and keep them. We don't build to sell to an outside buyer.
- Market
- Distribution-connected solar in West Michigan, sized to each site and to what the local grid can accept.
- Revenue
- Long-term agreements to sell power to local buyers, such as municipalities, schools and businesses.
- Land
- Leased from local landowners, with decommissioning written into every lease.
- Holding period
- The life of the project, measured in decades.
Why this approach
Why community-scale solar in West Michigan
Local buyers
Cities, schools and businesses nearby want clean power from projects they can see, sold under long-term contracts.
A smaller footprint
Projects connect to the local distribution grid, so they can move through permitting and utility review without the scale of a utility-sized plant.
Long-lived assets
A well-built array produces power for decades. Owning it for that whole period is the core of our business.
Where we are
Early stage, building the pipeline
Site screening
We're identifying and evaluating properties across West Michigan.
Utility review
We're working through the interconnection process with the local utility for candidate sites.
First project
A community-scale array in the Grand Rapids area, in early development and targeting operation in 2028.
