Our approach

A Grand Rapids company that keeps what it builds

Nelson Energy Co. develops solar projects in West Michigan and owns them for their full life. That shapes how we choose sites, write leases and treat the people we work with.

How we started

On the landowner's side of the table

Nelson Energy Co. began by helping rural landowners and farmers make sense of solar and wind lease offers from outside developers. We saw how often the terms that mattered most, like decommissioning, tax responsibility and what happens when a project is sold, were buried or left vague.

Today we develop and own projects ourselves from our base in Grand Rapids, with the same standard: explain everything, put it in writing, and never push.

Why we own our projects

Developers who sell leave. Owners stay.

One point of contact

You deal with the same local company for the whole lease, not whichever fund bought the project last.

Built to last

We'll be operating what we build for decades, so we design and maintain it that way.

Value stays local

Lease payments go to West Michigan landowners, and the company running the project is based here too.

Where we are now

Our first project

We're developing a community-scale array of about 1.2 megawatts in the Grand Rapids area, targeting operation in 2028.

Its plan sets aside 1% of gross revenue for renewable energy education for local students and opens the site to college field trips.
